Sony’s Spider-Man universe lines up new movie with Jessica Jones and The Defenders director.
Spider Man, The awkwardly-titled Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters only has one film released and two on the horizon so far, but plans are afoot to expand it with more films than you can shake a web at (whether fans want all of these films, we’ll see).
The latest reports about the goings-on over at the Spider-Camp are that Sony is looking at making a female-led movie that may involve the life support-bound mystic Madame Web assembling a group of heroines to fight crime. Or maybe not involve that at all.
Either way, Variety has reported that the studio has signed up SJ Clarkson, East Enders-turned-Orange Is the New Black director, to make a Female-Centric movie.
Not only did Clarkson make the leap from British soaps to US TV, but she’s also directed Marvel stuff before in Jessica Jones and The Defenders, so it’ll be interesting to see her attempt a big-screen comic book project.
The films already announced for Sony’s shared universe are the sequel to Venom, with Tom Hardy, and Morbius, which sees Jared Leto playing a vampire.
During the Amazing Spider-Man days with Andrew Garfield, Sony was planning on building up to a Sinister Six movie, and we can’t imagine it’s totally abandoned the idea of having its own team-up movie.
Spider-Man: Far From Home is available now on DVD, Blu-ray and digital download. A third Spider-Man movie starring Tom Holland has a release date of November 5, 2021.
