Personal hygiene By Oluwafemi Ogunsakin
Oral health cannot be overemphasized in the general well-being of man.
Therefore, I will be talking about GINGIVITIS, ITS SIGNS & SYMPTOMS, CAUSES, PREVENTION AND TREATMENT.
GINGIVITIS simply means the inflammation of gingivae(gum).
Gingivitis is a oral disease that’s caused by dental plaque(biofilm) which irritates the gum and thus causes discomfort.
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
> Bleeding while brushing.
> Swollen gums.
> Mouth odor (bad breath).
> Gum will be tender and painful to touch.
The major cause of gingivitis is dental plaque(biofilm) which accumulates and lodge in the grooves, pit and fissures of the teeth which later produce chemicals that is desquamative and also promotes inflammatory response on the gum tissue thereby resulting into gingivitis.
Since the causal agent is the dental plaque then, we must focus on how to get the plaque removed so as to reduce the rate of bacteria.
When treating GINGIVITIS, our aim is to dislodge the Dental Plaque which can be achieved by the following ways:
> SCALING AND POLISHING WITH CURETTAGE.
> MEDICATIONS SUCH AS ANTIBIOTICS.
> USE OF MOUTH RINSES AND WASHES.
In preventing GINGIVITIS, the major aim is to prevent dental plaque build up and accumulation.
Therefore, gingivitis can be prevented by maintaining good oral hygiene which include daily tooth brushing ( 2 times daily) and flossing.
Also, scaling and polishing with curettage should be done twice in a year.
Chlorhexidine, saline, alcohol and hydrogen peroxide mouthwashes can also limit dental plaque accumulation.
Almost all the measure that can be employed for prevention can also be used for the treatment.
Lastly, consult an oral health provider at least twice in a year or as soon as you notice any irregularity.
